Swellendam, at the foot of the Langeberg Mountains, is the 3rd oldest town in South Africa. The town was declared a magisterial district in 1743 and a few years later was named Swellendam in honour of the Cape Governor, Hendrik Swellengrebel and his wife, Helena Ten Damme. In 1795 the burghers of Swellendam declared a republic. British occupation of the Cape brought an end to this.
