MONTAGU TUNNEL

MONTAGU TUNNEL

The rough wagon road through Cogmans Kloof crossed the river
eight times and wagons often got stuck. Thomas Bain, the well-known
road builder, was consulted in 1873. He gave the road a “make-over”
and blasted a tunnel through the solid rock. The new road and tunnel
were opened in 1877 and paved the way for the accelerated
development of Montagu.
