Montagu is one of the best preserved and historically interesting villages in the Western Cape. It was established on the farm Uitvlugt, bought in 1844 by Mr. van der Merwe of Wellington. In 1851 he subdivided a portion of the farm and convinced a group of family members to settle there. The rich soil soon produced crops of grapes and apricots. Today Montagu is known for its excellent muscadel.
