Caledon, the capital of the Overberg, is situated on the slopes of the Swartberg Mountain. It has 13 000 residents. The first permanent settlement in the Caledon area dates back to 1710 when Ferdinand Appel was granted 10 acres of land at the hot springs. Caledon is named after the Earl of Caledon, the first British Governor of the Cape , 1807 – 1811.
