BONNIEVALE

The town was founded in 1900 by Christopher Forrest Rigg and
was named after Rigg’s grandfather’s home in Scotland. Rigg also
built the irrigation canal (completed in 1903) and to this day farmers
depend on it to water their crops of fruit and vines. Bonnievale has
the only vineyard in the country to be declared a national monument
Oupa Se Wingerd, planted in 1924, is on Weltevreden Wine Estate
and is still productive
