The town was founded in 1900 by Christopher Forrest Rigg and was named after Rigg’s grandfather’s home in Scotland. Rigg also built the irrigation canal (completed in 1903) and to this day farmers depend on it to water their crops of fruit and vines. Bonnievale has the only vineyard in the country to be declared a national monument Oupa Se Wingerd, planted in 1924, is on Weltevreden Wine Estate and is still productive
